Steven Gerrard is facing something of a dilemma as speculation increases surrounding the future of Connor Goldson with Leeds United, West Ham, West Brom and Fulham all said to be interested in acquiring the big centre- half’s services.

One option available to Gerrard is to return for a former target in the shape of Millwall’s Jake Cooper who has continued to improve since first being linked with a move to Ibrox in 2018 and was priced out of a move, however, with his contract about to expire, the Rangers gaffer could go back in for him.

Goldson’s asking price is rumoured to be more than double the £3m that was paid to Brighton in the summer of 2018 and with over 100 appearances and two money spinning European runs Rangers have more than made their money back with the 27-year old at the heart of the defence.

True or false, Graeme Souness's first signing as Rangers manager was Terry Butcher?

With four centre-halves at his disposal, Gerrard may see Cooper’s availability as an opportunity to cash-in with out weakening his squad and with Nikola Katic also being linked with a move away from Ibrox Rangers fans may finally be seeing a successful transfer policy in place – if players are sold for a profit and easily replaced.

Indeed, it could be argued that Cooper would strengthen his first XI with Premier League sides monitoring the 25-year old’s situation as they look to pick up the towering defender on a free contract agreement.

Ross Wilson and Gerrard have their work cut out this summer as they scour the continent for new recruits ahead of one of the most pressurised seasons in modern times, securing quality whilst juggling finances in the current economic climate will be no easy task.
