Former Premier League striker, Darren Bent, has backed Connor Goldson to be a success if the 27-year old Rangers centre-half makes a move to Leeds United as has been recently speculated.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bent details the qualities that he feels would make him a solid acquisition for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

So what has Bent said?

When asked if it would be a decent move for Leeds, the former Spurs man said:

“I didn’t think he was all that bad at Brighton – I’ve always thought he was powerful, always demanding and a commanding presence about him.

“For Leeds, yeah, he’s played in the Premier League so I think you need experience when you go to the Premier League, it’s a league like no other.

“You need quality, you need power, you need a whole lot of things to succeed in the Premier League so for me yeah, that would be a great signing.

“I used to see him quite a lot, I knew he was a big, powerful presence and he played a lot for Brighton.”

So is Bent correct?

Goldson may have made a couple of high profile errors but this shouldn’t detract from all the other good work he has done since arriving from Brighton two seasons ago.

As one of the first names on the team sheet he has been part of a defence that has reached the latter stages of European football and has the best goals against record in the league.

True or false, Graeme Souness's first signing as Rangers manager was Terry Butcher?

Bent is correct, Goldson has had some towering performances when it mattered most, has coped admirably with the pressures of Old Firm fixtures and has been a reassuring presence when partnering younger partners at the back.

In any other season, the rumoured price tag of £6m may have been enough to tempt Steven Gerrard to cash in but given the historical importance of the 2020/21 campaign, losing such a key player will not be part of his plans.
