We seem to have two types of transfer rumour this summer, players being lined up immediately and those being targeted in case there are departures.

The most recent rumour would certainly appear to fall into the latter category with another of Steven Gerrard’s former England team-mates said to be the subject of interest from Rangers.

The Sun claims that Crystal Palace’s Gary Cahill is a potential target given that he is out of contract and, as yet, unable to agree a new deal with the report revealing how much it would take to bring him up the road:

“Defender Gary Cahill, 35, is  being eyed by Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, who could give him £35,000 a week.

“Palace want Cahill to stay and sign a new deal after his contract expired —  but the offer is less basic cash with extras for appearances.”

There is an obvious reason why a deal is unlikely, we have six senior centre-halves currently in the squad being the main reason, however, there is one potential reason why there might be more to this one than meets the eye.

Connor Goldson has yet to sign a new deal so if we were to fill his role in the team with someone like Cahill then there wouldn’t be that big a drop off in quality, if any.

Cahill, although older, did have quite a bit of pace to lose as he gets into last few years of his career, he is also hugely experienced at the highest level both in international and continental football with 61 England caps to go alongside his Champions League, two Europa League and two Premier League winners medals.

Again though, I can’t see us making this move without someone leaving in the first place but we’ve seen the effect that other veterans like Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe have had on the squad – a long shot, but certainly not one that should be ruled out.
