There has been speculation linking Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Leicester with an interest in Rangers Filip Helander.

On Saturday, VitalRangers commented on this link and the liklihood of genuine interest emerging.

In a further update, Football Insider claim to have ‘revealed’ the price tag on the head of Filip Helander – a derisory £6 million.

Come on, get real please – there is not a chance Helander will be sold to England for a measly six million given market forces and the fees that change hands when clubs south of the border are involved.

Yes, the Scottish Premiership dictates that Rangers and Celtic can’t demand the highest fees for players, that is a given.

However, let’s look at some basic facts around the great form and development of Filip Helander.

The powerful Swede honed his talents in Serie A – the evidence of this has been stamped all over his performances for Rangers in this title winning season, in fact the Gers have not lost a single league game since he arrived at Ibrox in summer 2019 – incredible.

Helander is now a champion, thanks to the Scottish Premiership title coming home to Ibrox.

As things stand, he is now just two qualifying rounds away from the Champions League.

Last Thursday, the former-Bologna man put in an impressive performance for Sweden in their 1-0 World Cup qualification win over Georgia, having won back his place in the national team, alongside Victor Lindelof of Man Utd. This was followed up with another 90 minutes in the 3-0 win over Kosovo last night.

On his outing Swedish boss Janne Andersson stated: “Filip Helander is doing well. He wins duels and is quite stable.”

His partner Lindelof is rated at around £21 million despite not quite progressing as expected at Old Trafford – is there really such a disparity in the reported value of the two central defenders?

Given that Helander is set for the Sweden squad for EURO 2020, that increases his price tag even further, especially as he will likely feature.

On that Football Insider £6 million story, they largely included the points above and quoted:

“Rangers believe his value has significantly increased during the subsequent two years, and he is worth nearly double what they paid.”

This just doesn’t stand up to scrutiny – Rangers will not entertain any such low bids which would be a waste of time.

There is also the reported initial £11 million fee that Southampton paid to Celtic for Virgil Van Dijk as a reference point, clearly pointing to the £10 million mark as a fair starting point.

Steven Gerrard will be in no hurry to lose Helander, such is his value to Rangers but on the back of a strong season, an interesting summer lies ahead.
