There’s no doubt Rangers will have to fight off interest for some of their key players this summer, especially those at the European Championships and Steven Gerrard will be hoping to keep a hold of as many as possible.

One such player is Filip Helander, the towering Swede who has – incredibly – yet to lose a Scottish Premiership game for the Light Blues in his two seasons at the club.

The Daily Record has reported that the 15-cap star is attracting interest from the Premier League with Leicester City and Aston Villa said to be considering bids for the 27-year old, a player only now approaching his peak years as a centre-half with top flight experience in Serie A and in continental football.

He might not be the quickest of the defenders, but he is far from slow, his ungainly running style not doing him any favours, however, his positional awareness and sheer determination to block attempts at goal has seen him bail out his colleagues on more than one occasion this season – think Craig Moore to the more flamboyant Lorenzo Amoruso and how their partnership was such a huge success.

Helander still has a couple of years left on his contract so we are in a good position if we do get any offers and the report in The Record also claims that a replacement has already been identified in the shape of Elfsborg’s Joseph Okumu.

It’s going to be an interesting summer where keeping hold of our best players and getting top dollar for those that leave is going to be Ross Wilson’s hardest task, hopefully he will – as in Helander’s case – already have potential replacements lined up should we choose to cash in.
