Here at Vital Rangers we have already brought you the news that Billy Gilmour could be the first victim of Frank Lampard’s departure as Chelsea boss with the Scotland Under-21 international reportedly being allowed to head out on loan.

When he left Ibrox as a fresh-faced 15-year old for £500,000 few thought that he would make an impact in the first-team of such a big spending Premier League side, however, through hard work, dedication and no small amount of talent he has shown that he can more than handle himself in one of the world’s toughest leagues.

There will now be a clamour for his signature with claims that he is “preparing to leave” and the rumour of a return to Rangers is one that refuses to go away, there is no way that we could afford his price tag now but on a six or 18-month loan deal we would be able to give him the regular games that he needs to continue his development in senior football.

With Steven Davis now closer to 40 than he is 30, having a player like Gilmour at the opposite end of his career to ease the burden would be a huge asset, that the Northern Ireland skipper hasn’t confirmed his plans for next season is also an ominous sign.

Would you welcome Gilmour back?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The way that Gilmour – rated at £6.75million – left without ever playing for the first-team does still leave a bitter taste, not because of how he behaved, but because of the shambles we were in at the time, I refuse to believe that he would have left with Gerrard in charge.

Sometimes loan deals feel like you are developing someone else’s player, but in this instance it’s one that would go down well with fans, with Scotland’s brightest talent returning to his spiritual home – get that phone picked up Mr Wilson and bring him back where he belongs.
