Rangers strolled to victory against Dundee United at the weekend in a game in which  there were no obvious signs of either an emotional or physical hangover from our semi-final win over RB Leipzig.

What made the win all the more impressive is that we finished the game with four academy players in the team; Alex Lowry, Adam Devine, Charlie McCann and Leon King.

It is one of the finest crops of youth players coming through for a long time with two in particular catching the eye of, arguably, our best ever youth product, Barry Ferguson, as told to Go Radio via The Daily Record:

“It’s exciting times for Rangers fans. When you look at these young boys who played yesterday, King starting the game, the future is bright.

“Even at that age I can see those two being a big part next season. King and Lowry could save you an absolute fortune.“

Ferguson is right, McCann has looked very comfortable in his cameo appearances but King and Lowry have really stood out and will be expected to feature more regularly next season.

Not only will they save us a fortune but they could, realistically, make us one too having seen what Nathan Patterson left for in the January transfer window.

Not every academy player will make it into the first-team and be a key player but if we can get one or two every couple of seasons then we will be doing exceptionally well.

They don’t have to make the same impact as our former skipper but if they can provide back up to key players then it is a job well done, although it’s only a matter of time before King and Lowry are starting every week.
