Sometimes when you are distracted by the bright lights of a mega-bucks transfer saga, the “smaller” stories can sometimes get lost.

As well as looking to strengthen the first-team, Rangers long term transfer plan looks to be fully operational with rumours again linking the Light Blues to former Millwall youngster Abdul Abdulmalik, as reported by The Daily Mail:

“Portsmouth have had the 18-year-old on trial in the past couple of weeks after he was tipped as a bright prospect by former Millwall team-mate and new Fratton Park signing Shaun Williams.

“However manager Danny Cowley decided against following up any interest following his trial period, and the League One side will not pursue a deal.

“Millwall have previously rejected a number of approaches from Swansea for Abdulmalik, who has also been watched by Arsenal and Rangers.

“Swansea’s highest offer was a structured package worth around £200,000 with further add-ons.”

Abdulmalik is out of contract and as such, any team wanting to sign him will have to pay Millwall a compensation fee, as an England youth cap he is certainly one for the future and wouldn’t be getting signed to add depth to Steven Gerrard’s squad in the short term.

After losing Nathan Young-Coombes to Brentford in similar circumstances, it may be that the academy has identified Abdulmalik as having the potential to one day either make the first-team or, at least, make Rangers a tidy profit in the future.

It might not be as glamorous as the Veerman deal, but it’s exactly the sort that we should be making, similar to the one that saw us sign Calvin Bassey, for the money being mentioned, it’s well worth the risk.
