The SPFL has made its first comment in regard to game cancellations following the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.

Naturally, there has been plenty of discussion and speculation between fans on what will happen to the scheduled fixtures for this weekend and the days ahead as the UK prepares to enter an official period of mourning.

In terms of domestic games, it will be a massive surprise if any SPFL matches go ahead in line with almost all other sporting events and large public occasions which are expected to be called off as a mark of respect to the monarch.

As above, the Championship meeting between Cove Rangers and Dundee has been postponed with Scottish football’s governing body stating that a further communication will be released on Friday.

Then there is the complication of European competitions next week. Rangers as well as Celtic, Hearts and the Premier League clubs are all supposed to be playing Matchday 2 of the respective competitions, with Napoli due to visit Ibrox next Tuesday.

There is a huge question now against that fixture and all of the others but set against the possibility of postponements is the condensed Euro schedule ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, commencing in November.

Following the Tweet above from Mike Keegan of the Dail Mail, he later added:

“Update: announcement on football fixtures may come tonight. Leagues are waiting on government statement on period of mourning. Situation remains that this weekend’s matches are set to be called off.”

All will be revealed very soon.
