Two shocking statistics reflect an awful night in Amsterdam

In the build-up to the Ajax game, there was an expectation as well as a demand for a performance to make up for the horror show on Saturday – instead it was worse.

Back to back 4-0 defeats are hard to take but it’s the manner of the losses that is causing so much anger, coupled with the abject, disinterested nature of the team at present.

It was obvious at Parkhead on Saturday that Rangers basics were absent – attitude, application, desire, running, organisation – but on Wednesday night it was a case of déjà vu. The fundamentals are sorely lacking.

Rangers got a chasing from Ajax, it was a humbling and the four goals were the least that the hosts deserved but despite their domination, two statistics were revealed that provide a damning indictment on this Rangers team and where we are at just now.

Live on BT Sport in the post match discussion with Ally McCoist and Kenny Miller, host Darrell Currie revealed that Rangers had registered a combined distance covered on the pitch of 6km less than Ajax.

Just how can that happen given that they enjoyed so much of the ball? That is made even worse with the confirmation of a 75.2 / 24.8% possession split.

What that indicates is that something is clearly amiss in the dressing room. The players are currently giving the impression that they have downed tools and Saturday’s trip to Pittodrie should tell us all that we need to know.

To fail so miserably and not turn up on the Champions League stage is so disappointing but leads to other questions. Are they not interested in Gio’s methods or have they stopped listening? All is clearly not as it should be, that is very clear.
