You will have to go a long way back in Rangers history to find two, back-to-back, 4-0 defeats, making Giovanni van Bronckhorst a very lucky man if he survives the next few weeks.

The issue, is that the players are currently throwing the Gers gaffer under the bus when you listen to what he has said after the shambolic displays at Parkhead and in Amsterdam.

On reacting to quick set-pieces and throw-ins in preparation to play Celtic, he said:

“We prepared for these moments – that they were able to be dangerous and we weren’t ready so that’s very disappointing. You want to play a good game. Of course, you can always have goals against you but not in this manner. That’s not the way we concede goals.”

For last night’s first goal against Ajax, we had the bodies in the right positions to deal with the corner, and yet, we still gifted a free header, again, Gio was far from happy with what he saw:

“It’s about winning your battles, it’s about having the desire to win your duels because gifting a goal like that is very damaging.”

Once the players cross the whitewash, it is down to the players. The manager can change formation and change shape all they want but if the players don’t apply themselves or put into practice what they did in training there isn’t much more he can do. Gio isn’t making excuses for them, he isn’t defending them and they will know more than anyone that they are letting us down.

Individual mistakes have plagued our season so far and, starting with Pittodrie, we need to see a level of desire and work rate that has been missing for a few weeks, we also need to see that they have been listening to their manager because there is only one outcome if there are anymore signs that they aren’t
