His arrival wasn’t met with quite the same fanfare but the arrival of Mateusz Zukowski was a great example of the work that is being done behind the scenes at Auchenhowie that now sees us boast an enviable recruitment department.

A recent article in The Athletic explained just how much of a shambles our scouting network was until only recently, after all, how else do you explain the signings of Dalcio, Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera?

Speaking to Rangers TV, via The Scotsman, Ross Wilson explained how the Poland Under-21 international came to be at Ibrox for a fee suggested to be around the £300,000 mark:

“Our scouting network in Europe have tracked him intently and we are pleased that Mateusz has now become a Rangers player.

“As part of our transfer strategy this window we wanted to recruit a young, right full-back who we see high potential in to further develop.

“Mateusz absolutely fits the profile that we were looking for in the market and we are all looking forward to working with him. He is a determined character and I know how excited he is to come here.”

If you have watched or seen highlights of Zukowski it’s scary how similar he is to Nathan Patterson in terms of his physical attributes and his style of play. He is quick, comfortable in possession and loves to drive forward and contribute to attacks.

The good thing about signing a player like the young Pole is that he has plenty of time to develop under James Tavernier’s guidance, he will know that he is a backup just now but that, if he progresses, one day, the right-back jersey could be his own – as we saw with his predecessor though, sometimes you don’t even need to do that to get yourself a big money move.
