With Rangers announcing the massive capture of former England international striker Jermain Defoe earlier today on an 18 month loan contract from Bournemouth, fans will now be quickly turning their eyes to another bit of speculation we’ve seen – a potential return for former player Steven Davis.

With the right noises coming from Southampton about being open to doing a deal that works for their player given the length of service he gave them after originally leaving Ibrox, the Defoe news did overshadow that speculation.

It’s now been suggested though that instead of the original speculation – a mutual contract termination at St Mary’s Stadium enabling him to join us permanently as a free agent – the deal will revert to a simple loan deal for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign to simply see out the remaining part of his Southampton contract.

Sky Sports reported on Sunday that the player has held talks, and was set for a medical ahead of completing a move.

He’s long been a favourite for a return when it comes to the fans, so it’ll be nice to get this one over the line early as well so he can join our warm weather training camp and begin settling in once again.

Edit – and it’s now over the line and confirmed.
