Former manager Walter Smith has said that he doesn’t believe the press have given Ally McCoist the credit he deserves for helping the team to promotion given our off pitch troubles.

Speaking to the Official Site whilst doing the promotion for Manchester United’s visit to Ibrox for the Legends game in aide of the Rangers Charity Foundation and UNICEF, Smith took time out to applaud the work that Ally and his staff have done this year.

‘I don’t think he has had the credit he deserves for winning the Third Division when you consider where the club were at the start of the season. I don’t think there has ever been a more shambolic pre season for any club going into a season, especially a club like this, where the expectation is so great.’

Smith adds it was folly of the bookmakers to play up the ‘we’ll win every game’ angle because it did a disservice to the teams in the league who set themselves up properly and provide a tough game of football naturally, let alone the boost they get in trying to scalp a club like Rangers.

‘It’s been far more difficult than many imagined it would be and I think Rangers, and Alistair in particular, deserve credit considering there were a lot of new players and they had to learn about the expectation levels. Hopefully we see a more settled Rangers next season.’
