Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon insists Rangers “greedy” players will be spurred on toward further success in the new season.

The former Dundee United boss saw his team record a morale boosting 1-0 victory over the Scottish champions on Saturday afternoon which will augur well for their League Two preparations over the coming weeks.

An excellent Kieran Morris strike from outside the box, just before half-time, turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Mellon believes that Rangers should get a reaction from Old-Firm rivals Celtic which will act as a catalyst to push them further, especially after last season’s title success.

Rangers will be more experienced this season and they will be hungry again to get some more of what they enjoyed last season.”

“That’s what happens to good players, they get greedy and they want more.”

“They are driven by a top manager and a huge fan base which will drive them on.”

“They will now get a reaction from the other side of the city from Celtic so it should be a keenly contested battle.”

The Scotsman also tipped Rangers new signing John Lundstram to settle into Ibrox very quickly:

He’s a quality player and anyone who plays in the Premier League is going to head up to Scotland and be able to handle playing for either of the big two.”
