Few signings are met with universal praise nowadays, especially if a player is relatively unheard of, Fashion Sakala being a good example of this, there will always be a few who raise questions just because they’ve never heard of someone.

In the case of John Lundstram though, most of us have seen what he is capable of in the Premier League and it has only been bitter Sheffield United fans – who were desperate for him to stay – that have been critical of the move.

The exciting aspect is that Steven Gerrard, alongside Gary McAllister, have proven that they can improve midfielders and have rarely got it wrong in that department, something former Ger Barry Ferguson has been keen to point out with the acquisition of Lundstram, as reported by The Daily Record:

“The signing of John Lundstram on a free transfer from Sheffield United underlines it.

“Believe me when I say, this is a proper football player they’ve just got their hands on and it shows that Gerrard is not allowing anyone at the club to take their eye off the ball.

“Put it this way, he would have commanded a very hefty fee if he was still under contract so it looks very much to me as if Rangers have landed the bargain of the summer already.”

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

Ferguson is right, if Lundstram was still under contract we’d be looking at a transfer fee in region of £10million, he is that good a player, he has a lot of the basics needed to be a top class midfielder and make a real impact at the club, as the former Gers skipper says, he’s a “proper player”.
