Scottish Writers Premiership player of the year, Steven Davis, saved Rangers from a very serious problem this season, according to Ibrox icon, Ally McCoist.

The Northern Ireland captain and record British international caps holder belied his veteran status in the season just finished by displaying a remarkable level of performance and consistency.

His impact was underlined with the Scottish writers award but Super Ally feels that not only did he play his own part, but that he stepped into the breach left by the injured Ryan Jack and stamped his mark all over the Champions as they raced to the finish line.

Speaking to the Herald, Rangers highest ever goal scorer stated:

“With Ryan’s absence, it could have been really, really serious for Rangers.”

“But at the same time Steven Davis has come in and been absolutely out of this world towards the end of the season. He’s been absolutely phenomenal.”

“So Rangers have been … not fortunate, but a little bit blessed – obviously there have been good performances as well from (Glen) Kamara and (Joe) Aribo.”

“Injuries to those players – particularly Ryan Jack – could have affected Rangers worse had it not been for the performances of Davis.”

The now four time Scottish title winner is set to shine at Ibrox for another 12 months.

It is unlikely that he will feature as much next season as he did this term, but Davis is exactly the type of man and player to exceed expectations.

At the turn of the new year, he will be 37 – don’t put it past him to still be playing beyond his 38th birthday however it is one step, one year at a time for Rangers and Northern Ireland’s midfield maestro.
