Substitution that shows Sakala has to be sold

At 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0 up against Ross County, there was no better time to give Antonio Colak a breather after his breathtaking start to life as a Rangers player and bring on the only other natural striker we have available at the moment.

When Steven Davis came on for the big Croat and Tom Lawrence moved into a false nine position, it was the biggest indication yet that Fashion Sakala’s future lies away from the club and getting money for him over the next few days would surely be the best option for everyone concerned.

Not only would it free up space in the squad for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to bring in someone who he would actually utilise, but it would also be fair on a player who has done little wrong since he signed, regardless of your opinion on his technical ability.

That Davis and Scott Arfield both came on when we all know what they are capable of doing, Rabbi Matondo replaced Ryan Kent and Scott Wright stayed on for the 90 minutes further emphasises just how far out of the picture the Zambian international is.

It could be that the manager will be starting him against Queen of the South on Tuesday night but, given his lack of minutes, this season – just a handful off the bench against PSV Eindhoven – you would think 20-30 minutes to stretch his legs would have been ideal preparation.

We seem to have enough players who are capable of playing in the wider positions so, if Ross Wilson can work his magic, another striker in the same sort of mould as Colak would help to bolster attacking options with Sakala making us a few pounds in the process – he might not be fancied by Giovanni, but there are plenty of other teams that would take a forward with a goal or an assist every 110 minutes or so last season.
