Alfredo Morelos has been a much-maligned figure this season, with the forward often drawing the ire of the teams that he faces, both for his goals and his often-fiery personality.

His latest controversy came against Celtic, with the striker involved in a number of incidents that made Hoops fans angry.

However, Seven Gerrard has this week come to the defence of his forward with a passionate discussion of the topic, via BBC Sport.

He said: “The kid [Alfredo Morelos] is young, he is trying to learn and grow, he is trying to protect himself”.

Gerrard continued: “There is no doubt he is targeted, because he is a super talent. But he should see it as a compliment, because I certainly do”.

Clearly, the boss is paying tribute to the brilliant job that Morelos has done this season, and this assessment is very fair. The best players are always targeted, and it’s no different here.

Does Morelos sometimes overstep the mark? Certainly, but you’d rather that than have a player that is afraid to get stuck in. He’s the sort of player that everyone loves to hate – unless he plays for your team.

It’s hard to see any Celtic fan not being delighted if he were to ever move to Celtic Park. They’re just upset that they don’t have someone of his quality, we think.
