Steven Davis has joined an elite band, following his opening goal in Sunday’s Scottish Cup victory over Celtic.

The Northern Ireland captain – and record British international cap holder – has now scored in Old Firm victories across three different competitions.

Even more impressive is that the goals have come in separate decades.

Prior to securing this particular ‘hat-trick’ two days ago, Davis had previously netted against the Parkhead side in his first stint at Ibrox.

Historic

Back in 2009, the Ulsterman grabbed the only goal of the game in a crucial 1-0 derby win at Ibrox.

Fondly remembered for his slide right into the net on the sodden pitch, Davis’ goal was crucial for Rangers to establish a two point lead at the top of the then-SPL table as Walter Smith’s Rangers would go on to claim their first Scottish title since 2005.

The League Cup feat came in 2011, the same season that the Gers secured a third league title in a row – and Walter Smith’s farewell.

On a very famous day at Hampden, it was Davis who secured the opener for his team, sending a daisy cutter past Fraser Forster between the sticks for Celtic.

Joe Ledley responded for Neil Lennon’s team before half time and with no further goals at full-time, this one was to be settled in extra-time.

It was Nikica Jelavic who landed the winner for the Gers, racing through to finish a quick-fire free-kick pass from Vladimir Weiss.

This goal was confirmed thanks to a special spin from the Hampden post – the rest is history.

All three strikes in different competitions send Davis into illustrious company.

Talk among Rangers fans online has, so far, identified others such as Jim Forrest, Ralph Brand, Alfie Conn and Ally McCoist, as having secured the same honour.
