Floodlight failure in Albufeira meant that Rangers friendly fixture against Sunderland was abandoned after a lengthy delay.

The second half was unable to commence with darkness beginning to descend on the Algarve, with Rangers trailing 0-1 at the break.

Of course, it was a training game with the main purpose of getting minutes into the players legs but the display from Rangers was a bit flat.

From the perspective of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, he will have a few frustrations. Firstly that his team was unable to respond in getting back into the game, that others weren’t able to get game time and overall that his plans have been disrupted in this way.

What compounded the misery for everyone watching on TV was the cut in transmission for around 15 minutes only for it to finally resume just as Sunderland grabbed the opener.

A corner wasn’t cleared and what appeared to be a mistake from Jon McLaughlin was punished by the Mackems’ Luke O’Nien.

As the second half appeared to be imminent, Robby McCrorie, Adam Devine, Glen Kamara and Fashion Sakala were stripped and ready for action. Alas, it was not be with the long wait eventually seeing a return of some power within the stadium and a surge to the lights, but it was too late.

A decision had already been taken, with the players welfare likely at the forefront of considerations.

The fans on both sides attempted to make some noise and keep up the spirits during the downtime, only for the end result to be one of  disappointment. The small, basic Municipal Stadium in Albufeira failed the test when it mattered.
