Walter Smith has been appointed by the club as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board.

Everybody knows Walter’s credentials, his experience and his love of and success here at Rangers and he know succeeds Malcolm Murray who has agreed to step down.

The decision to appoint him was unanimous.

Speaking to the Official Site Walter said of the outgoing chairman and his role going forward now.

‘Malcolm stepped forward at a time when the Club needed direction and I will always be grateful to him for that. Rangers should always be at the pinnacle of the game and the fans deserve nothing less. Unity amongst the directors is vital, we must all be on the same page as often as possible. We won’t always agree but Rangers, this Club and our fans must always come first. It’s a great honour to take up this position and it goes without saying that I feel proud as well as humble.’

Smith does fire a bit of a warning saying that nobody should view his position as being a role which is passive. He certainly doesn’t, it hasn’t been his way in the past and it certainly won’t be his way in the future.

Chief Executive Craig Mather said the move from the board was in an effort to help drive the club further forward now, and help us kick on to the next stage of our regrowth and Walter is perfectly placed to achieve that.
