Following the exit of Mark Kerr as manager at SPFL Championship side Ayr United, a number of former Rangers players are said to be in contention for the vacant role.

The Honest Men are currently perusing a shortlist of candidates with further action imminent as they step up their chase to land their new man.

Highly-rated coach Maurice Ross is one of the individuals of interest to Ayr and it is believed that he has been sounded out by Ayr chairman, David Smith

Most recently, Ross was part of the backroom team at Motherwell but left his position last month, following the arrival of new boss Graham Alexander and a change to his duties.

He told the Fir Park club’s website:

“I feel the time is right for me to pursue other challenges in my career, given how my role has changed here in recent months.”

The treble winner from his playing days at Ibrox is said to be wanting to be his own man and to stake his claim for a manager’s job, on the back of coaching experience that includes the top job at clubs in Norway and the Faroe Islands.

He could now get his break in Scotland with Ayr United.

Another former Ger linked with the role but somewhat of an outsider is Stuart McCall.

McCall was a temporary manager at Ibrox in the troubled 2014-15 season which ended in the infamous play-off defeat to another of his former clubs, Motherwell, prior to the Mark Warburton era.

The ex-Bradford City manager would be something of a coup for Ayr but given that he is currently unattached, it cannot be ruled out.

Other contenders are said to be Iain Murray and David Robertson.

Murray is the current manager at Airdrie, with his contract in place until the end of this season.

He played for Rangers between 2005 and 2007 and featured in the 2006 Champions League Last 16 clash with Villarreal when Rangers came very close to qualification for the quater-finals.

Meanwhile, former Ibrox wide-man Davie Robertson has been reported as favouring a return to Scotland from his present role as boss of Real Kashmir in the Indian I-League.

In the troubled region and source of ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, Robertson featured on a popular BBC documentary production on his life in the danger zone.
