There’s been more than a bit of hypocrisy floating about Scottish football in recent days, much of it to do with Rangers charging the media for exclusive access to Steven Gerrard and his squad, however, the latest transfer story has shown one of football’s biggest “characters” for what he is.

As Peterborough United’s director of football, we are constantly hearing from Barry Fry going on about clubs making derisory offers for their players or him setting transfer fees that are miles above anything that a team just promoted from League 1 should be demanding and yet, he has the gall to criticise the price tag being set for George Edmundson.

Fry, speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, revealed exactly how much the Gers are wanting for the centre-half currently being eyed by a few teams in the EFL when he said:

“We were interested in (George) Edmundson, but they wanted £1.5 million for a player who hardly played for them and who spent last season on loan at Derby.

“That interest didn’t last long.”

It must be a nightmare doing business with Peterborough because you know everything is going to be made public, he just can’t help himself.

How far will Rangers go in the Champions League?

Aside from that, what is wrong with £1.5m for a defender who has knockout experience of the Europa League and spent last season on loan in the Championship? When you consider some of the prices being paid down south, that is a bargain – especially for one who has potential to develop even further.

It’s sheer hypocrisy from a man who has spent the last few years demanding Premier League prices for players who are unproven at the highest level and in some cases even in England’s second tier, very much a case of wanting to have his cake and eat it and the perfect of the arrogance that still exists in some down south.
