Rangers centre-half contingent is set to lose one of it’s numbers and if reports are accurate, it could be as quickly as today.

George Edmundson has been the centre of recent speculation linking him with a return to England and it appears as if Ipswich Town have won the race for his signature, according to Football Insider:

“Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the transfer is now done and Edmundson will be confirmed as an Ipswich player once international clearance is rubberstamped.

“The centre-back has penned a package spread across four years in total.

“Ipswich have agreed to pay Rangers a fee just short of £1million for the player they lured from Oldham Athletic in 2019.

“Ipswich have won the race for Edmundson after seeing off competition from a number of EFL clubs.

“Championship new boys Peterborough United had an offer for Edmundson rejected and Derby County enquired about a new loan.”

As is standard practice, the deal with have add-ons relating to performances and if he is sold on but with Peterborough United’s director of football claiming that the asking price is £1.5m, it would be a surprise to see him go for less, however, this still represents a good deal for a player unlikely to get much game time and who only cost in the region of £600,000 when he was signed from Oldham Athletic.

Not every transfer will work out, especially when signing young or raw players, but if they can contribute and be sold at a profit, it does’t matter if they go on to be a club legend – previously this is the sort of player we would have lost money on or loaned out until his contract ended, not any more though and it’s yet another sign that things are heading in the right direction.
