Saturday opponent says Rangers have missed out not signing 28-year-old in January

Kilmarnock defender Stephen O’Donnell has stated his surprise that Rangers did not move for former teammate Greg Stewart in January, speaking on BBC Sportsound.

Stewart had an immensely successful loan spell at Killie in the first half of the season, being a key reason they were at the top end of the table for so long.

O’Donnell reckons his skills could have easily transferred to Rangers and solved the ‘number 10’ problem that is currently such a big headache for Steven Gerrard.

Speaking to BBC Sportsound, the Killie man said:

In January, Greg Stewart was with us. There was talk of him leaving and all sorts of speculation and rumours.

Rangers was the one everybody thought he would fit in because he’s a 10, they play a three with one in the middle and Morelos up top, I felt he would have done a brilliant job.

I know maybe he hasn’t done as well as he did in the first-half of the season, but he is a player with real quality.

And I thought why not take a gamble on him? You’re getting good value on him and he has the quality.

Have Rangers missed out on not making a move for Stewart? The player is now at Aberdeen but did not feature during Tuesday night’s cup defeat at Ibrox.

Scoring 9 goals and creating 9 assists so far this season it’s clear he has the talent to offer a significant attacking contribution and as noted by O’Donnell could have been that link between midfield and attack that Rangers are crying out for.

Hopefully those creative problems are not on display tomorrow at Ibrox when we take on O’Donnell’s Kilmarnock in Scottish Premiership action.
