An update has emerged this evening claiming that James Tavernier will sign a long-term contract extension with Rangers.

The report came from ‘transfer specialist’ Fabrizio Romano stating that the new terms would see the club captain remain at Ibrox until 2026 meaning that his service at the club would surpass a decade.

It was only yesterday that marked seven years since ‘Tav’ made the move to Glasgow alongside Martyn Waghorn, to play under then Rangers manager, Mark Warburton.

If confirmed, this would be very unique in modern day football for a player and a very good one at that, to stay in one place for such a long time, particularly when Tavernier is a Yorkshireman with no prior ties to Glasgow.

Yes, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis are veteran, time served players at the club but the events post-2012 resulted in a broken line in their service to Rangers.

This new contract and 10 years of Tavernier at Ibrox would also mean that the player would be due a testimonial.

Previously, this would be a bumper pay-day for players to go toward their post-football lives but with the money involved in the game nowadays, these types of initiatives are more about recognition as well as raising funds for charity which would still be a very worthy occasion.

James Tavernier is a cornerstone of this Rangers team and will remain so for some time to come although his impact will inevitably diminish.

Time will see to that just like all other players and matters of life but knowing the type of character and player that the Rangers leader is, he and his role will adapt to the circumstances.

This fine Rangers career story to date still has a few more chapters to be written.
