Rangers are set to “miss out” on a deal for Jack Wilshere with the England international poised to head overseas, according to a report in Football Insider.

Ever since his release from West Ham United, the Light Blues have been linked with a move for the 28-year old – rated at £4.3million by Transfermarkt – with sources close to both parties claiming that it was very much a possibility.

Bongani Zungu signed for Rangers on deadline day and it may be that the South African international’s arrival has ended any hopes of fans seeing Wilshere strutting his stuff at Ibrox, for the home side at least.

Regardless of his pay out form West Ham, he wouldn’t have come cheap and the current form of Steven Gerrard’s midfield five domestically – and on the continent – has probably negated the need to bring in any further players – especially with Zungu about to be freed from quarantine.

Would Wilshere have got a game for Rangers?

No

There was always going to be an issue about keeping Wilshere fit, a distraction that wouldn’t be needed ahead of such an important season, his skillset matches that of Steven Davis but with Zungu potentially being the best passer of a ball at the club now, there just isn’t the room in the squad.

When the interest was first rumoured, Rangers had Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo on the sidelines and had sold Greg Docherty and Ross McCrorie, the midfield looked stretched until Zungu was signed, with six internationals at the gaffer’s disposal now, it can be argued that the engine room is the strongest area of the pitch – and one that doesn’t need the help of a player who has seen just one injury free season in the last ten.
