The Daily Record last night reported that well known Rangers scout, Ewan Chester, was in attendance at the Hibernian v Dundee United Scottish Cup replay which set the rumour mill in motion once again.

With Steven Gerrard claiming that there wouldn’t be many – if any – incomings into Ibrox during this transfer window, speculation has been quiet with Ross Wilson focussing his attention on getting fringe players out the door either on loan deals or permanent transfers.

Rangers had been looking to secure the services of Stoke City’s Tyrese Campbell but the 20-year-old striker has put pen to paper on a new deal to stay at Michael O’Neill’s club, with the Gers missing out, their attention may have turned to a player they have previously been linked with.

Lawrence Shankland has been scoring goals for fun over the last few seasons in the Scottish Championship and this term for Dundee United has been no different with 25 goals in 25 games, including another screamer from outside the box against Hibs.

The former Ayr United striker had been available for nothing in the summer and the Light Blues were  linked with a move as back up to Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe but nothing came to fruition, it is expected that if they were to make a move now that the Scotland international would cost in the region of £2-3m.

The other name mentioned – albeit very quietly – was Scott Allan, Gers fans are well aware of the saga from Mark Warburton’s time in charge and where he ended up but again, this story has been rubbished by Rangers and a move seems unlikely given how unpopular it would be amongst the Ibrox faithful.

Should Rangers make a move for Lawrence Shankland?

Yes

Yes

No

No

There is, of course, one other more obvious reason why Chester would be at Easter Road, Rangers play Hibs in the league next Wednesday, but don’t let that get in the way of starting a decent rumour.
