Report – Dundee in dramatic SPFL vote u-turn with “lucrative” offers made to Dens Park club

|

According to a report in The Scotsman, Dundee are set for a spectacular u-turn following the vote fiasco that has surrounded the SPFL’s resolution on ending the 2019/20 season.

All 42 of the SPFL member clubs were requested to vote before 5pm on Friday evening, however, it has subsequently turned out that this was only an advisory deadline and that clubs had up to 28 days to cast their vote.

The league’s governing body then released how many votes had been received on Friday evening and what the current results were in a strange turn of events which led to claim and counter claim surrounding the integrity of the proposal, it also left the one Championship club that hadn’t voted holding all the cards.

Once the dust settled it was established that Dundee had indeed “tried” to vote against the deal and even on their own website had stated that they would be in line to lose between £4-5million were it to go ahead, not only would their city rivals, Dundee United, be promoted but they would also lose out on the revenue from the four Tayside derbies.

It was revealed that Dundee had sent their no vote only for the SPFL to not receive it but, conveniently, they did get a follow up communication from them stating that they wanted to withdraw their initial decision, the resolution allowed members to change their mind within the 28 days if they voted no, but not if they voted yes.

Dundee still have a chance of promotion to the Scottish Premiership but in a bizarre, if not wholly unexpected twist in the story, it is now claimed that the Dens Park club have been offered “lucrative” incentives – believed to be friendly matches against Premiership clubs – to change their mind.

With Rangers demanding an independent investigation and the immediate suspension of both Neil Doncaster and Rod McKenzie of the SPFL because of their role in the farce, Gers fans may be short of competitive action to watch but it may be worth getting the popcorn in anyway because things are about to get interesting.
