Walter Smith returned to Rangers in January 2007 with the club in disarray following the spectacular failure that was Paul le Guen’s tenure. After steadying the ship with the club out of every domestic tournament, he set about restoring the Ibrox side to the summit of Scottish football to cement his place as a true great of the game.
Smith filled his squad with a mixture of promising Scottish talent and established professionals and gave Rangers fans one of the greatest seasons in living memory, a true case of “what might’ve been?”.
