Red Star Belgrade registered a narrow 1-2 away win today in their Super Liga clash away to FK Metalac.

Against a side who sit second bottom of the Serbian top flight, with two wins and a draw from their five games prior to today, Zvezda won the game thanks to goals from Omoijuanfro and Pankov after the hosts had taken the lead.

Dejan Stankovic’s team will be happy to have picked up the win to go level at the top of the table with Partizan, who drew yesterday, in preparation for the massive Europa League showdown with Rangers at the Rajko Mitic stadium.

Only one change was made from the side which lined-up at Ibrox last week with Ben coming in for Srnic in midfield.

Three days from now they will have it all to do with a three goal deficit to overturn if they are to pull off a comeback against Gio van Bronckhorst’s Gers.

A Monday afternoon kick-off is certainly unusual for us in the UK and in most major European leagues but such fixtures are regular in and around the Balkans with no detrimental effect on the crowd, as can be seen from the image of the away support, below.

Red Star will now have just over three days recovery time before Rangers visit and whilst they will have a vociferous, hostile crowd on their side, they also face a pressure and an expectation with the Scottish champions bringing their own threat and intent to seal a quarter-final spot. Bring it on!
