Reason To Smile 24 Months On

Manager Ally McCoist has said that there has been, and still is, plenty to smile about when it comes to life at Rangers even if he casts his mind back two years and looks to the present.

Two years ago today Rangers entered administration and things came to a head, and to be fair, it hasn’t really stopped since with numerous other problems, issues and off pitch distractions getting in the way of what has to be the solitary aim of getting Rangers back into the Scottish Premiership and competing on all fronts again.

Starting from the bottom of the tiers again, McCoist said there was plenty to smile about following our promotion at the first time of asking last season, and then the fact that the club are still fighting for success on three fronts this season – but despite that he does reference Walter Smith who commented that Rangers would be in for a hell of a time for three or so years, and that has proven to be true.

In quotes carried by Sky Sports our gaffer explains.

‘Walter Smith went on record as saying we were going to have two or three years of really hard times. I would absolutely echo and agree with that but within the hard times, you’d hopefully have one or two opportunities to smile about and be happy about. At this moment in time, I’d probably say we have one of them.’

McCoist quickly adds that he’s ‘loathed to tempt fate’ given we look clear in the league for automatic promotion for successive years, and we have only dropped two points in the league campaign all season so far. Added to that we also have a Ramsdens Cup final to look forward to and have reached the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup with a home tie against Albion Rovers on the horizon as well.

It’s not just that for McCoist though, as even though his main remit is first team affairs, it would be remiss of him to not pay good attention to Gordon Durie’s U20 side, and he says there’s a lot of hope and belief for the future from those lads as well with their current nine match winning streak – 14 unbeaten in all.

So at least on the pitch – minus a few performances – things are looking up and are going in the right direction.

For McCoist it’s about staying level headed and remembering where we are, what we are striving towards and where we have come from to keep things in perspective. Don’t be too down when things get choppy, but don’t be arrogant and get carried away when things go our way.

Ultimately he feels that with everything that has gone on over the past few years if the fans take a little step back and look at the overall picture, he hopes they’d be very happy at the moment, even though obviously we’d all rather have done without the last few seasons.
