Rangers have failed in their attempt to bring Bournemouth defender Jack Simpson to Ibrox on loan this summer, according to The Daily Star.

The paper say that Steven Gerrard was keen on bringing the 21-year-old to Glasgow on a loan basis, but the English Premier League side have ruled out the move, believing the central defender has a role to play in Eddie Howe’s squad.

Rated at £225,000 by Transfermarkt, Simpson has made just a handful of appearances for the Cherries, making his Premier League away to Manchester City last season.

The hunt for a first-team ready defender at Ibrox continues.

With Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic impressing in the early stages of the season with four clean sheets from eight matches, there is no emergency rush to bring a central defender in, but it’s clear Steven Gerrard feels his squad needs more depth in the position.

As we approach the end of the transfer window, that’s likely to become a more and more difficult task.

Can the Gers pull out one more stellar defensive signing to really give us the edge needed in what will be a long and arduous season?
