Rangers target Gareth McAuley, who was linked with a return to Ibrox earlier this summer, has emerged as a possible signing for both Hearts and Aberdeen in the closing stages of the transfer window.

That’s according to The Sun, who say that both sides see him as a viable solution to their need of an experienced defender ahead of the Scottish football season.

The former West Bromwich Albion man is a free agent currently having left the Baggies at the end of last season.

He was previously linked a move to Ibrox in June and is seen as a potential option to provide back-up to Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

Given the Gers’ struggles to find that third elusive centre-back, a move for the veteran Northern Ireland international on a free transfer wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world from our perspective.

If Hearts and Aberdeen are in the running to sign him, his wage demands can’t be too steep and he’s played long enough at a high level to provide the Rangers squad with quality, depth and experience.

The fact we haven’t yet moved to sign him this summer may tell us that we’re not too interested, but with time running out to find another defender and other teams now interested in the player, will it see us focus on bringing him to Ibrox?
