The one that got away, the missing link, a source of frustration for some supporters but ultimately, Joey Veerman is now a direct threat to Rangers Champions League hopes.

It has been widely reported that the Dutchman had been identified by Steven Gerrard as a key target to help the Gers reach the next level, but nothing materialised this time last year, with the 23-year old making the move from Heerenveen to PSV in January.

Veerman scored against Monaco in both legs of the third round qualifier and now he will look to inflict the same on Rangers with a spot in the group stage of European football’s top tournament at stake.

Former Ibrox favourite Arthur Numan warned of the talents of the midfielder who has also been tipped to land a spot in the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar:

“Make no mistake, PSV have talented footballers and they are very strong and robust at the back. They are building a team to win the league title. In midfield, they have Joey Veerman. Rangers were linked with him this time last year and I think that he’s a very capable performer.”

“He scored the opening goal for PSV against Monaco, and he likes to attack from the central area.”

Danger

Often a deep lying midfielder, Veerman has the knack of finding his way forward at the crucial moment to score from around the edge of the box – it’s an attribute that would be most welcome at Ibrox but Gio van Bronckhorst and his coaches will need to devise a plan to keep him quiet, in addition to the other quality assets that PSV contain at present.

Numan added that a positive result at Ibrox will be crucial, to enhance the chances of sealing qualification in the second leg, but it is set up to be a great encounter over the two games with Rangers also able to inflict damage of their own:

“From a Rangers point of view, I would have preferred the first leg in Holland. I always liked it better when we had the return leg at home. But Gio van Bronckhorst will look to take any sort of lead to Eindhoven the following week.”

“Any victory next Tuesday should be regarded as a positive step. As has been the case for a long period, Rangers will take a bit of stopping and PSV know this.”

Rangers v PSV, Gio v Ruud van Nistelrooy, John Lundstram against Veerman – this one is finely balanced with so much on the line.
