Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield may have a combined age of 110 but the trio are set to play Champions League football once again with the Ajax the opponents at Ibrox on Tuesday.

Given the significant absentee list, Gio van Bronckhorst looks set to return to the tried and tested for the challenge against the Dutch champions in what is likely to be the last European game of the season for the Gers. That is unless they can pull off a remarkable feat in winning the game by five goals which would secure third place in Group A and Europa League participation into the New Year.

A very tall order to say the least.

Experience

In McGregor, Davis and Arfield, Rangers have three classy, reliable professionals who the manager trusts. They are still playing a part but should Rangers really be relying on veterans on this elite stage? No is the short answer but it is not a black and white matter, especially with the current queue for the treatment table.

The returning Glen Kamara is likely to come off the bench but given the limited options at Gio’s disposal, the veterans are going to play.

What they don’t have in stamina, they do possess in experience but the tempo of the game will be a concern. Previously at Ibrox against Napoli and Liverpool, the first hour saw a contest before a Rangers collapse in both games – which also included James Sands red card against the Italians.

More of the same with a different end product would be very welcome.
