A sign of how far we’ve come in recent seasons is the calibre of player that we are now being linked with compared with even just a couple of years ago when we were starved of any success.

Rangers fans were wanting Lawrence Shankland or Sam Cosgrove not that long ago and with Hibs rejecting a £3million offer for Kevin Nisbet there has been murmuring on social media for us to take another look at the player who was once linked with a move to Ibrox from the Scottish lower leagues.

When fans were debating which of the above names – or Lyndon Dykes – that we should sign, the recruitment team were busy analysing Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, it’s a fair assumption to say that they know what they are doing and can be trusted to make the right decisions.

We could be in the market for two strikers in the summer if Alfredo Morelos leaves and Jermain Defoe retires and, as we’ve seen with Steven Gerrard before, we could return for a previous target.

Who would you rather have?

Josh Maja has found himself surplus to requirements at Bordeaux after a change of manager and he could be the perfect replacement for El Bufalo, if the price is right, Ross Wilson is fond of loan-to-buy transfers and it could be the perfect way to assess the former Sunderland striker, every penny is a prisoner and all that.

The sporting director keeps a tight ship with regards to rumours and this is another reason why the Scottish press takes the easy option of linking us with other players at “rival” clubs, however, there is a reason we haven’t signed any of them – they aren’t good enough for the Champions League, which is where we are heading.
