There might not be a total overhaul of the Rangers squad in the summer, however, we can expect to see more than a few departures so that Giovanni van Bronckhorst can bring in his own players, not only that, but we need to clear a pathway for talented youngsters like Leon King, Charlie McCann and Alex Lowry.

One such player is Jack Simpson, he’s not quite stealing a wage but he is pretty much be paid a reported £3,000 a week to train and watch games from the stand, the previously mentioned King being preferred as an option off the bench in recent weeks.

There have been a few stories linking him with moves away from the club, however, nothing materialised in January and it looks as though we might struggle to offload him in the summer too after a report in Birmingham Live revealed that, contrary to previous reports, Birmingham City are not considering a move for the 25-year old centre-half:

“Similar to the Aflie Mawson claim Blues are said to want to reignite interest in another January target Jack Simpson. They were said to have been interested in the Rangers defender late in the last window.

“Simpson has struggled to make an impact since joining Rangers from Bournemouth in February 2021. He has made only 13 appearances since then and has not been in a match-day squad in the league since January. BirminghamLive has been told Simpson is not a target for the summer window.”

Simpson still has a few years left on his Rangers deal and it might be that getting him off the wage bill is the main objective, his wages – if accurate – aren’t excessive, so even if we have to fund part of a loan deal it wouldn’t break the bank, after all, nobody is going to buy him if they can’t see him playing.

Having paid a nominal feel for Simpson it’s not been a disaster in terms of cost but he just hasn’t looked comfortable in a Light Blue jersey, in fairness though, he put in a decent performance against Celtic in a 4-1 win at Ibrox last season, we should maybe show potential suitors his highlights from that game to tempt them into bidding.
