A Rangers fan on Twitter posed an interesting question after the 3-0 win over Annan Athletic. Are Leon King, Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann now ahead of Jack Simpson, Scott Wright and Cedric Itten in terms of getting first-team opportunities?

The early rounds of the Scottish Cup is always a great for giving youngsters the chance to experience life in the first-team, it also gives fans the opportunity to get a look at the ones that have been impressing for the B or academy team.

The Rangers shirt will never shrink to fit a player so when King, McCann, Lowry and new signing Mateusz Zukowski played as if they have been in the squad for years it was a great indication of whether or not they have a future at the club, you have to believe that you are good enough to make it but then work harder to stay there.

On the flip side of the coin is fringe players who need minutes or those who are coming back from injury and need to get match fitness back – Aaron Ramsey, Filip Helander and Kemar Roofe all falling in the latter category.

For Scott Wright, the game against Annan Athletic was a great opportunity to dominate a game and show that he can be relied up to contribute to the Rangers attack and yet he never really gave Giovanni van Bronckhorst anything to think about that he didn’t already know.

He works hard enough and can be neat in possession but it takes more than that to be a Rangers forward, he looks like a player who is aware he should be doing more in terms of assists and goals rather than believing that he is good enough to hold down a regular place – maybe he should have a look at the likes of Lowry who is showing a bravery way beyond his years.
