Jack Butland has, apparently, joined a new shortlist of potential replacements for Allan McGregor alongside Shamal George and Angus Gunn after the England international’s name was mentioned at the weekend as being a realistic target.

But it is the links with Gunn that are most intriguing seeing as he once commanded a £13.5million transfer fee and cost Norwich City £5m to sign him from Southampton.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Gunn is on the shortlist despite the type of fee that might be involved:

“I’m told he is actually one of the people that they are looking at. I think there are a couple of other names as well.”

It’s a tough call between the three names that have recently came to prominence, all of them have similar physical traits and attributes so it may come down the the finances when Ross Wilson has to make the decision.

Take George at Livingston as an example, he looks very composed and unflustered and couldn’t do much with the goals he conceded against us on Saturday but he doesn’t have the same experience as Butland or Gunn.

Conversely, at 25-years old, he is the youngest and has the potential to develop further, his upbringing in Liverpool’s academy will also stand him in good stead.

Of the three, Butland probably ticks the most boxes because his contract is expiring and he will be available for free in the summer. He isn’t quite zero risk but he has a solid CV and would have several suitors from down south should it not work out at Rangers.

As well as a number nine, the announcement of our new number one is going to be the most anticipated of the summer and Ross Wilson, after getting it wrong last summer, has to get it right this time.
