Giovanni van Bronckhorst has steered Rangers through relatively stormy waters into a strong position at the top of the Scottish Premiership, but the hard work is far from over with a couple of tricky away games still to come before the winter break.

If we are in a similar position going into the break he can be pleased with the start he has made as Rangers manager and will no doubt be looking to add his own players that fit the system he now employs, something that former skipper, Barry Ferguson feels is imperative if we are to retain our title, when asked on the Go Radio football show, via Football Scotland, about our potential transfer plans:

“Do it when you’re on top.

“It’s clear that Celtic are going to strengthen, no doubt about it.

“But I think Rangers will as well because they’re top of the league by seven points, but I think it’s going to be really important.

“I’m looking forward to January because Celtic are clearly going to do a lot of business and I think Rangers will do some business as well.”

There is a notable difference this year in that success could be determined by who we retain when the window shuts, a position both sides of the Old Firm were in last season.

There won’t be wholesale changes at Ibrox but there needs to be a couple of minor tweaks or signings that are made to future proof the squad, resting on your laurels is never a great idea in football especially if a large number of key players have contracts that are due to expire in 2023.

Ferguson, on this occasion, is correct. Van Bronckhorst will know the type of player he is looking for, if they fit the profile needed to be a Ranger and our trading model, the manager needs to be backed, it’s early stages, but the signs are that he knows what he is doing and should be trusted accordingly.
