Why Rangers could be ready to spend big

There are still another six days until the transfer window officially opens, yes, Rangers can sign players whose contracts have expired, however, the 10th of June is when the fun really should commence.

This is purely speculative but, I genuinely believe we will spend decent money this summer, something we haven’t seen since Steven Gerrard’s initial 12 months and for all that it is mainly a gut feeling, there are a few pointers that suggest we should be putting our hands in or pockets to get top targets in early.

Guaranteed group stage Europa League football

This is the first time in over a decade that we have had a minimum European kitty the following season already in the back pocket that can be budgeted on, of course, the Champions League is the priority but as we have shown, going deep in the second tier competition can be equally as lucrative.

The books are healthy

Stewart Robertson was already projecting a profit before we sold Nathan Patterson for a record fee, made seven-figures on Steven Gerrard’s departure and reached the Europa League final, our accounts have never looked so good.

There will be sales

Whether it is man of the moment Calvin Bassey, established internationals like Joe Aribo or Glen Kamara or players in the final year of the contracts like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, it would be hugely surprising if all of our key players line up for our first competitive fixture of the 2022/23 campaign, all of whom will command decent fees, some bigger than others if the £25million valuation of Bassey is to be believed.

We have already made positive moves

Cedric Itten has been sold for £1.5m give or take and John Souttar has arrived following his pre-contract agreement that was signed in January, a fringe player has left and a starter has arrived and we are better off, yes, they are in different positions but in terms of the squad we are in better shape already – Connor Goldson staying is potentially massive for Gio’s transfer plans.

It’s going to be an interesting summer and, unlike last season’s post-Covid-19 frustrations, I think it’s going to be our most productive and enjoyable one for a long, long time – buckle up!
