Rangers fans could have to wait until the very last minutes of the transfer window before seeing the midfielder(s) that Steven Gerrard has longed for throughout the summer if recent developments are anything to go by.

It has gone quiet in the last couple of weeks with just Daniel Johnson being the only name regularly linked with a move to Ibrox, however, the Premier League’s bloated squads could offer a realistic opportunity to bolster the numbers in the engine room.

One team in particular dying to get players off the wage bill and trim their squad is Everton, a club that has long had links with Rangers – and despite the obvious Liverpool connection – Carlo Ancelotti’s side could provide an experienced campaigner dying for game time.

Muhamed Besic is a Bosnian international with 45 caps to his name and is used mainly as a defensive midfielder, he has yet to feature in any of Everton’s squads this season and with his contract expiring in less than 12 months, he could be available at a knockdown price having been transfer listed by the club.

He has one blemish on his record which is a serious knee injury suffered in 2016, however, he has been fully fit for the best part of three and a half years now, proving that it is not an issue to be concerned about.

Would Besic be a decent signing for Rangers?

With over 100 appearances in English football – half of them in the Premier League – he has shown that he can compete with some of the finest midfielders on the continent, a potential loan or cut-price move to Ibrox could be the ideal opportunity to kick-start his career and provide the Gers gaffer with additional depth to his midfield talents – without breaking the bank.
