It appears Rangers won’t be signing Manchester City defender Kean Bryan after all this summer, despite the club being interested enough to agree a deal and give him a medical.

The Scottish Sun report that the Gers have pulled the plug on the deal after that process, meaning the £2.5m in wages that was planned to be spent on the 21-year-old will now be used in the hunt for another centre-back.

Gerrard was thought to be keen on signing the player, aware of his form last season for Oldham, but it seems something has come up in the medical that has made his move impossible.

The former England U20 international ticked plenty of boxes for the Gers and would have been an exciting 11th signing of the summer, with the club badly in need of some defensive depth beyond Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson.

It’s evident that choices beyond that pairing are extremely limited.

Other centre-backs have been linked in recent weeks, the most interesting of which was probably Jake Cooper of Millwall.

Now the Bryan deal is dead, will be see the club return to the Lions with an improved offer for the 23-year-old, or is another defender going to come from nowhere and take us by surprise?

Regardless, the final few weeks of the transfer window should be exciting.
