Michael Beale claimed ahead of the January transfer window opening that he wasn’t in the market for a goalkeeper – he should be, but that’s another story – however, it has been reported that we have turned our attention to an experienced campaigner to replace Allan McGregor in the summer.

Alex Crook of Talksport, is the journalist who has claimed that Rangers are considering Asmir Begovic as a safe pair of hands to take over from our current number one, at 35-years old he is the same age as Jon McLaughlin but he does have significantly more experince at the top level.

Currently at Everton, Begovic’s contract is due to expire in the summer and, after playing second fiddle at AC Milan and Chelsea in recent seasons, he may want to have one last go as a first choice stopper.

His age is an obvious eyebrow raiser, but goalkeepers are performing for longer at the top level nowadays. There is no reason why Begovic couldn’t be trusted to play for another few years, he should be highly motivated and free of the mental fatigue that comes with playing every week too.

With a squad in need of repair, it makes sense to save money wherever possible and being able to pick up a player with 63 international caps for free makes a lot of sense both on and off the pitch.

It might not be the most forward thinking transfer but if it means that we can get better quality with greater sell on value elsewhere then it would be one that makes a lot of sense.
