Rangers goalkeeping situation has, if we’re being honest, been an issue since the day that we won the league title. Leaving the decision down to Allan McGregor rather than being proactive and recruiting a new number one has proven to be costly both last season and this.

We have been linked to plenty of names, however, no moves have ever been made and it has now become a priority position to upgrade next season at a time when we will have other areas that will also need attention.

Speaking to Football Insider, former England keeper Paul Robinson believes that he knows just the man for the job:

“If they can get him out of Man United, Tom (Heaton) would be an excellent option.

“Tom is somebody who has a lot of unfinished business. He got injured at Aston Villa and never won his place back because [Emiliano] Martinez came in.

“He has not been given a fair chance at Man United. I suspect promises have been made by previous managers and nothing has come to fruition.

“Tom is far better than being number three goalkeeper, no matter what club he is at. He is not at that stage of his career yet. He has so much to give.

“A move to a club like Rangers would be a very good move for him. It would be great for Rangers as well because he is a top-class goalkeeper. Tom is hungry. He would be a fantastic acquisition for any club.”

Considering McGregor is nearly 41-years old and Jon McLaughlin is 34, I just can’t see us moving for another veteran, yes, keepers can play for longer but it would just be another short-term option. Someone like Jack Butland, at 29, would, at least offer us another 4-5 years before having to potentially consider his replacement.

Heaton, with three England caps, is obviously a good keeper, I just don’t think he is any better than what we currently have or even begins to address the problem that has been staring most of us in the face for the best part of two years – most of us except Ross Wilson it would seem.
