Scottish football and the SPFL are in crisis with Rangers leading the way in an attempt to clean up the game after securing an extraordinary general meeting for May 12 where the evidence that they have of wrongdoing is likely to be top of the agenda.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Rangers right-back , Alan Hutton, backs his old club in their dead for a truly independent investigation.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked to comment on the latest developments in the saga that saw a secret investigation carried out by Deloitte only to be immediately questioned by Rangers and the SPFL send a threatening letter to member clubs should they follow the Ibrox club’s lead, Hutton said:

“Look, it’s just a mess upon a mess, to be honest.

“They need somebody else to come in, who has nothing to do with the SPFL and possibly go through it, which they want to happen.

“It’s just holding everything back, to be honest, it just seems a bit of a mess. I would just like to see it sorted out so we can focus on the main thing which is football and not make a mockery of it. It’s a difficult situation for everybody.

“Obviously Rangers have something, a whistleblower or whatever, which they believe is information that is going to impact everything. I think that everybody needs to see the information before the 12th of May and decide how they take things forward.

“Just for Scotland and football in general, I would just like to see an end to it all. The best outcome is for this to be sorted and we can hopefully can finish the season.”

So is Hutton correct?

The only way that the SPFL can avoid the court action that has been threatened by Rangers is to hold an investigation looking at the individual points raised by the the Ibrox club, Hutton is correct, it needs to be sorted so that the focus can be on how best to finish the 2019/20 season and starting the next one.

The Deloitte investigation has already been picked apart after there were discrepancies between their findings and Dundee’s own timeline of statement’s from the vote fiasco, someone isn’t telling the truth.

Who scored the most goals in all competitions in 2018/19?

For a member club to demand the suspension of such high profile figures as Neil Doncaster and Rod McKenzie would suggest that they have substantial evidence that needs to be presented and now that the EGM has been announced, it shouldn’t be long before it reaches the public domain.

There needs to be a clean slate in Scottish football if it is to move forward in unison and the SPFL’s attempts to sweep Rangers concerns under the rug do little to inspire confidence in their running of the game.
