When the transfer window eventually re-opens Rangers will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen their attack and they have shown over the last couple of seasons that they are willing to look overseas as well as closer to home with Josh Maja the latest name to make the press.

One major decision facing Steven Gerrard will be what to do with Alfredo Morelos, there is no questioning his talent, 77 goals plus 29 assists in 139 games point to money well spent for a player costing in the region of £1million but the last few months have shown that it might be time to cash in on the Colombian international.

Despite showing to be a hugely generous and kind individual with his own charitable foundation and by distributing food parcels to affected areas of his homeland during the coronavirus pandemic, Morelos remains the target for personal abuse from sections of the Scottish football media and may feel that he needs to get away from the Glasgow goldfish bowl.

With a fee expected to be around the £20m mark depending on how football finances are affected when it eventually returns, Rangers will have money to spend but there are players that Ross Wilson and Gerrard could target to strengthen the forward line without breaking the bank.

Who was Rangers top goalscorer in 2008/09?

Hal Robson-Kanu at West Brom is an experienced target man with 44 international caps for Wales who would offer something different to the current strikers at the club and has scored 12 goals in 32 appearances, although not prolific, he has helped to fire the Baggies to within touching distance of the Premier League.

Derby County’s Chris Martin, like Robson-Kanu is also out of contract at the end of June and has similar numbers of 11 goals in 31 games but a lot of his game time has come off the bench, his nine league goals and six assists coming in just 16 full games worth of minutes. As a Scotland international he would be a handy addition for European football and provides a physicality currently missing in the forwards.

At 6ft 5 inches tall, Artem Dzyuba is another who would bring a sizeable presence to the Gers attack, something that has been missed since the days of Dado Prso, with 24 goals in 42 Russia caps and 13 goals and 10 assists in 21 league games for Zenit St Petersburg in the Russian Premier Liga, he has shown that he is more than capable of leading the line on his own.

Successful Rangers teams of the past have always had a good mix of forwards and it is one criticism over the last two seasons that could be labelled at Gerrard, not enough depth or variety in the striking department.

They will be looking for the next Morelos – like Maja of Bordeaux – that can be developed and sold at a profit but they should also be looking at reliable options that have shown they can operate at the highest level without breaking the bank and these three offer just that, whether or not they make it onto Gerrard’s list, only time will tell.
