There is speculation that the Rangers Supporters Trust buy out plan could be dead after the mystery backer was ‘outed’ in the press.

According to a report on real radio tonight, the man who was willing to back Rangers Supporters Trust plan was 100% behind it and had presented the idea to the board and the bank, but when his name was revealed in the papers today he withdrew his interest.

Rangers Supporters Trust are said to be fuming at the news and are scratching their heads at how the name got leaked as they themselves had signed a confidentiality agreement.

The man thought to have been the backer was Scots entrepreneur Jim McColl. The plan was for Rangers fans to put their hands in their pockets to raise enough money to buy David Murray’s shares, and then the work towards paying off the debt.

The RST said the plan was for 20,000 Rangers fans to pay £600 each up front, and then £15 per month via direct debit for the next couple of years. All in, each fan would be £1500, and they would then have a say on the running of the club.

It is something that has been done in European countries such as Germany and Spain, and has been very successful. The deal could be dead though unless the RST could find someone else to underwrite it.
